The School of Exercise Science & Athletic Training at West Virginia Wesleyan College serves to prepare students for a wide range of graduate study and/or careers in the fields of athletic training, exercise, sport and occupational physiology, sports medicine, sports performance, fitness and sports management, coaching, strength & conditioning, health and wellness, biomedical research,  clinical exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, and other allied health fields. Students have a choice of three areas of study: Exercise Science, Health and Human Performance, or the 5-Year Masters of Athletic Training.

  • Majors
    • Exercise Science – B.S.
      • Theoretical as well as hands-on applied laboratory skills in modern metabolic testing, performance enhancement, physiologic assessment, and applied exercise prescription. 
      • Exposure  to formal research/thesis procedures and scientific writing necessary for current research publications in the field.
      • Use applied exercise science along with studies in biology as a pre-medicine track such as pre-physical therapy, pre-chiropractic, pre-pharmacy, etc.

       

    • Health and Human Performance
      • For careers in community health and wellness, corporate wellness, personal training, athletic coaching, strength coach, and medical sales.
      • Gain knowledge and skills to affect lifestyle health choices.
      • Employment opportunities in corporate, clinical/medical, not-for-profit organizations, commercial/private settings, academic institutions.

    • 5-Year Master of Athletic Training
      • Earn two degrees: Exercise Science B.S. and Master’s of Athletic Training.
      • Theoretical knowledge and understanding of the athletic training profession, blending classroom instruction and structured clinical experiences.
      • Gain eligibility to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination upon graduating from Wesleyan.
      • Employment opportunities after graduation/passing the board exam, include athletic trainer for secondary schools, colleges/universities, professional athletic teams, sports medicine clinics, industrial preventive medicine clinics.
